CERAMIC POTTERY

A rich tradition in Rhodes

Rhodes has a long standing tradition of pottery going back to antiquity. Replicas of designs produced in those times are still manufactured today, along with new modern designs. Vivid colors, especially blue, are very prominent, along with certain uniquely Rhodian motifs, like the pomegranate flower and the classic deer.
The island has many ceramic factories selling hand painted pottery, typically vases, plates and ash trays, a very popular souvenir bought by travelers.

One of the first manufacturers of Greek pottery was IKAROS that started out in the early 1900s. The factory was originally a school (IKAROS, International Ceramic Arts).

Mr Hadjicontantis, the owner, was devoted to the ceramic art and truly loved making pottery (one look at his works is enough to tell how much he enjoyed it); he produced a vast number of invaluable pieces. His collection is still notorious in the present day and people are so interested that you can even find some pieces sold on e-Bay!
